Gift Cards: The Holiday Gift With Hidden Value (If You Use Them)

As the holiday season ramps up, many people gravitate toward gift cards – and for good reason. They offer flexibility, avoid disappointment over wrong-sized sweaters or unwanted gadgets, and allow recipients to choose what they really want.

But there’s a catch: a large share of gift-card value ends up sitting unused. The numbers may shock you…

The Hidden “Cash on the Shelf”

  • According to research, 43% of American adults report having at least one unused gift card, gift voucher, or store credit.
  • The total value of these unspent funds is estimated to be around $23 billion.
  • Higher-income households are particularly likely to have unused gift cards.

So while gift cards are smart in most cases, the upside only works if you actually use them.

What You Should Do: A Gift-Card “Audit”

Before buying (or redeeming) gift cards this season, take a few minutes to:

  1. Locate unused cards: Scan your wallet, purse, car compartments, email inboxes, and apps.
  2. Verify balances: Most retailers have online tools to check remaining value.
  3. Set reminders: Use the cards before early 2026 to avoid fees, lost value, or expired promotions.
  4. Resell or re-gift: Some platforms let you recoup 70-80% of face value instead of letting it sit idle.

For those who are focused on wealth preservation and smart cash flow, gift cards can be a “hidden asset.” Track them, redeem them strategically, and avoid letting these dollars slip away – whether toward gifts, everyday spending, or charitable giving.
