In the ever-vigilant quest for financial stability, a lesser-known threat lurks — Bank Jugging.
This form of robbery is not just about the immediate financial loss; the psychological impact is profound.
What Is Bank Jugging?
“Bank Jugging” or simply “jugging” refers to a scheme in which an offender or group of offenders follows bank customers suspected of having large quantities of cash as they leave banks or other financial institutions, such as credit unions, ATM/ITMs or check-cashing stores.
Using this method, criminals stalk their victims, ensuring the person has a significant amount of money, and then act out their premeditated plan – usually burglarizing their victims’ car or person.
Most often the crime occurs at the following destination the victim goes to after leaving the bank, such as a restaurant, grocery store, or even their home.
That means every time you’re at the bank, a parking lot, or an ATM, there could be someone watching you. If you’re carrying a bank bag, coin box or bank envelope, the risk is higher.
If they sense a probable score, they won’t hesitate to follow you to your next destination and wait for the right moment to strike. And even worse than losing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in a few seconds, is the trauma of being the target.

How to Prevent Bank Jugging
Follow these safety tips to avoid falling victim:
- Be vigilant of individuals lingering without purpose in the vicinity of the parking area or lobby of a financial institution.
- Maintain focus while you’re inside. To avoid distractions, refrain from using your phone or wearing earbuds.
- When you have obtained cash, secure it in a nondescript bag, like a briefcase or purse, rather than the small cash envelopes or bags often provided.
- Upon entering your vehicle, ensure all car doors are locked.
- Avoid leaving large sums of money unattended in your car.
- Be conscious of any vehicles that might be trailing you after you leave the parking area.
- If you suspect you are being followed, contact emergency services by calling 911, or head straight to the nearest police or fire station.
- Remember: If you see something, say something. Your awareness can help protect both you and your community.
