How Airlines Are Recovering From the CrowdStrike Tech Outage

Hundreds of flights within the United States were canceled yesterday as carriers, particularly Delta Air Lines, work to recover four days after a worldwide technology outage caused by a faulty software update stranded tens of thousands of passengers at airports around the nation.

According to FlightAware:

  • Over 1,000 flights into, within or out of the United States were canceled Monday.
  • Over 9,000 flights into, within or out of the United States were delayed Monday.

Despite these numbers, the majority of carriers returned to nearly normal levels of service disruptions by Monday. This intensified the glare on Delta’s relatively weaker response to the outage.

For context, Delta passengers have been slammed by more than 4,400 cancellations since Friday, including more than 950 as of Monday evening, by far the most of any airline.

US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has expressed frustration with the pace of Delta’s recovery, and its CEO has apologized to those affected. The airline’s chief executive said it would take “another couple days” before “the worst is clearly behind us.”

The airline said it hopes to “make it right,” offering SkyMiles, vouchers and the right to request a refund for travelers, among other offers. However, the airline’s policy says it does not compensate passengers for lost income due to canceled flights.
