Ticket Prices Skyrocket for Caitlin Clark’s WNBA Debut

Basketball phenom Caitlin Clark will make her WNBA regular-season debut tonight when Indiana visits Connecticut, and prices are skyrocketing.

  • Typically, the rate for a Connecticut Sun home game is $45. At this point, even the cheapest seat in the house is expensive (~$300 with resale tickets as low as $127 on TicketMaster).
  • The more expensive, court-side seats are selling for close to $5,000.

Luckily, fans of the Fever, the Sun or Caitlin Clark who don’t want to pay such high prices have the opportunity to stream the game tonight. The WNBA game will stream live on Disney+ with games also available on ESPN+ and ESPN2. This will be the first time that Disney+ will stream live sports.

The most talked about college-basketball star Caitlin Clark is Iowa’s all-time scoring leader. She’s the Big Ten’s all-time leader in assists and has managed to set the NCAA single-season record for three-point shots. Clark broke the record for NCAA’s top scorer of all time, previously held by Pete Maravish in 1970, this year with 3,668 points.

Although Caitlin Clark is the best college player in a generation, she will be paid significantly less than even the lowest earners among her male counterparts: $338,000 over the next four years.
It’s important to note that the NBA brings in more than $10 billion a year, while the WNBA has a reported $200 million in annual revenue, which unfortunately is reflected in the players salary differences. NBA players receive half the cut of revenue while WNBA only receive half of the incremental revenue and half the revenue from sales of jerseys of specific players, but only after beating set sales targets. That full-court chasm in basketball pay is why so many women play overseas during the WNBA offseason.

It’s a busy week for sports all around: The NBA and NHL playoffs continue, the NFL will release its schedule for the upcoming season on Wednesday, the PGA Championship begins Thursday, and the final day of the tense Premier League season is Sunday.
